Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling
Effective Visualisation & Understanding of Water Storage
Trident CFD modelling
In addition to our capabilities around traditional water network modelling, utilising software such as InfoWorks WS PRO, Synergi Water, InfoWorks ICM, & EAPNET, we also are able to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling (CFD), using the Ansys software and tools. CFD modelling provides a further in depth analysis and understanding on water movement through pipes and fittings, as well water storage.
What is CFD Modelling
CFD modelling is a highly visual specialised stream of modelling, which is used in the water industry to illustrates how water moves within water fittings, pipes and storage tanks such as service reservoirs. CFD modelling can illustrate the path of water in, around, and out of a reservoir, while highlighting low and high velocities, and areas of recirculation which can cause high water age.
At Trident, we can offer CFD modelling to:
-
Gain an insight into how water is interacting inside your reservoirs with either a steady state or transient simulation in fully 3D models.
-
Provide commentary and insights into problem areas (low velocities, recirculation, high water age).
-
Optioneer solutions for improving water motion and turnover within your reservoir.
-
Full reporting with animated results provided.

This type of modelling is also used in many other industries, where it is important to understand how our designs interact with the world around them. Typical applications of such technology being used is in car design including Formula one.
Why Trident?
Our team of CFD modelling is overseen by our Principal Hydraulic Modeller, Clare Kier. With experience carrying out CFD modelling directly for the UK water sector using Ansys CFX/Fluent, Trident knows we can provide the experience needed in
-
Construction of a full 3D reservoirs, including existing features such as pillars, sumps, and pipes.
-
Mesh creation.
-
Model setup, both steady state and transient.
-
Model calibration against telemetry flows and levels.
-
Model verification against chlorine tracer data.
-
Solving and results post-processing.
-
Optioneering for reservoir operation improvements
The optioneering for reservoir operation improvements includes:
-
Inlet pipe orientation adjustments.
-
Baffle curtain configurations.
-
Perforated inlet pipes.

Our expertise is not solely confined to service reservoirs, Trident can also deliver:
-
Analysis of velocities and substance transport in an impounding (raw water) reservoir including simulation of a reservoir mixer to reduce stratification and disperse suspended organic matter.
-
Simulation of an above ground conical service reservoir collapse with a focus on inundation of the surrounding area.
